GENERAL INFORMATION
The start date determines the rental season. Prices are quoted per day and hire periods are calculated on 24 hour basis, e.g. if a car is collected at 3pm on a Monday for one week’s hire, it must be returned the following Monday by 3pm. Minimum hire period is 3 days per island (except when hiring group F, V, P & W on the multi-island hire system - see above). Drivers must produce a full, current driving licence held for a minimum of one year, if not in English then accompanied by an accurate translation or an International Driver’s Permit. For the new style, 2 part UK licences both the photocard and paper counterpart are required, but an older paper licence is sufficient with a form of photo identification such as a passport. Where the following charges are quoted in NZ$ they are payable locally and subject to Goods & Services Tax (GST currently 12.5%) unless indicated otherwise.

VEHICLE INSURANCE
Vehicle insurance is included for 3rd party liability insurance cover and property damage up to NZ $5 million. An excess of NZ $2,500 for car groups A-E and NZ $3,000 for car groups F, V, P & W apply should there be damage to the vehicle or a 3rd party. If you purchase Excess Reduction Insurance locally this is reduced to NZ $225 for NZ $24 per day for car groups A-E and NZ $27 per day for car groups F, V, P & W. Alternatively you can opt to pre-pay the Excess Reduction Supplement through Trailfinders which costs £9 per day for car groups A-E and £10 per day for car groups F, V, P & W and this reduces the excess to NZ $100 for all car types. Another benefit of taking this out is that the excess payable for windscreen damage is reduced to zero.

DEPOSITS
All rentals are subject to a deposit at the time of vehicle collection to cover miscellaneous/optional charges and the applicable insurance excess. A NZ $100 fuel deposit is also taken and refunded at the end of the rental if you return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as on collection. Deposit payments must be made by credit card.

ONE WAY HIRES
One Way Hires are available free of charge between all locations in New Zealand, subject to vehicle availability.

AIRPORT/FERRY CONCESSION RECOVERY FEE
An additional fee of NZ $28 per hire is payable locally if you collect or return your hire car from/to an airport or ferry terminal depot. Avis have downtown locations in the main cities which we recommend you use rather than picking up from airport locations; this will save you having to pay this fee and gives you a chance to recover from your flight before you have to drive.

DRIVERS
The minimum age for hire of vehicles is 21 years. Additional drivers are free but have to be registered on the rental agreement.

DRIVING AREAS
There is no insurance cover to vehicles driven on unformed roads (ie dirt or farm roads and including beaches). North Island: 90 mile Beach in the Bay of Islands. South Island: Tasman Valley Road you may drive to Mount Cook village, The Hermitage, but no further. You may not drive on Skippers Road near Queenstown.

COUNTRY LOCATIONS
A surcharge of NZ $50 is payable locally for all pickups in the remote locations of Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport and Gisborne.

UPGRADING
If you have booked and paid for a particular car type and on arrival you are offered ‘an upgrade’, you will be required to pay extra for it! You would also pay more for the upgrade locally than if you had paid for the bigger car originally.

CHILD SEATS
Child seats are required by law in New Zealand, cost NZ $35 per hire (payable locally) and must be requested at time of booking. There is a refundable deposit of NZ $50 required for each seat. These seats are suitable for children weighing 9 to 19.5 kilos (approx 1 - 4 years) and are not suitable for newborn infants under 1 year.
